Lumpiang Shanghai, Tortang Talong hailed best food in Southeast Asia

It’s a tie for Lumpiang Shanghai and Tortang Talong as top winners on the list of Taste Atlas’ annual Best Ranked Southeast Asia Food.

The all-time favorite Filipino dishes were both hailed the best food in the region, both with a score of 4.8.

They were followed by Bubur Ayam, which is a famous rice porridge in Indonesia.

The food ranking was based on ratings of online food critics and online visitors of the Taste Atlas website last March 2022.

The global food database described Lumpiang Shianghai as “the most popular variety of lumpia, the crispy deep-fried Filipino snack that evolved from Chinese spring rolls”.

“Even though lumpia appears in numerous variations, the Shanghai version is characterized by a savory filling which combines ground pork or beef with carrots, onions, various seasonings, and (occasionally) shrimps,” it added.

Tortang Talong, the Pinoy version of omelet, was also a hit among foodies! The global food database described the dish as “simple” but “versatile delicacy”.

“This versatile delicacy is easily adapted with additional ingredients such as ground meat and vegetables, and it is traditionally served accompanied by steamed rice and tomato or banana ketchup. Inexpensive and quickly prepared, tortang talong can be enjoyed at any time of day as a hearty breakfast, lunch, or dinner,” Taste Atlas said.

The website also suggested a list of places where tourists can enjoy the taste of Lumpiang Shanghai and Tortang Talong.

Meanwhile, balut was listed as the “worst food” based on reviews.
