A 36-year-old Filipino chef in Singapore suffered burns and blisters on his back after he visited a massage center for the Chinese cupping procedure.

In a report by Asia One, citing a report from Singaporean-Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao, the Filipino claimed that the procedure left a burning pain on his skin.

According to John, this happened last July 28 together with his wife.

It was John’s first time to do the traditional procedure, but he promised himself not to do it again after experiencing excruciating pain after the session. The following day, he added, it got worse and blisters started to appear on his back.

Photos of John’s back show angry red spots that turned grayish black in some areas.

The massage center said that what the Filipino experienced could be a “reactions due to dampness” or sensitive skin.

They advised him to see a doctor and agreed to pay for the expenses. John, however, only requested a refund which they readily processed.

His blisters have now scabbed over.
