A UAE-based Filipina nurse captured netizens with a sweet video of how they celebrated the seventh birthday of her daughter.

Kathleen Mendoza, 36, is one of the nurses in the UAE battling at the front lines of the fight against coronavirus disease (COVID-19). She said when the pandemic started, she decided to send her daughter Renee to her grandparent’s house to lessen the risk of infecting her.

On April 29, Renee’s seventh birthday, Mendoza and her husband surprised their daughter. She said that they made Renee wear a full personal protective equipment suit so they can hug her on her special day.

“Me and my husband traveled together to surprise her on her birthday. We bought her a cake and a gift. It was just a simple yet heartwarming celebration,” she said.

While she has been a health in the UAE for 12 years now, Mendoza said that this current crisis has truly tested her skills and abilities as a nurse.

“Honestly speaking, it’s hard. I get a lot of sleepless nights, crying nights. But as a mom, I need to be strong for my family, and, as a nurse, know my patients also need me. I just pray hard for my protection and safety all the time,” she said.

The OFW added that she stays strong through constantly communicating with her daughter via video calls.

“I constantly explain to her why we need to be apart from each other for now, and how serious the situation is. Of course, I always tell her how much I love her,” said Mendoza.

As to other frontliner parents, Mendoza says, “Keep on praying, and keep yourselves safe all the time. Malalagpasan din natin lahat ito.”
