Wushu athlete’s father passes away as he competes in SEA Games

Grief has quickly took over the rush of overwhelming victory of Indonesian Edgar Xavier Marvelo in two Wushu events at the 2019 SEA Games.

Marvelo’s father died while he was competing in the event, according to the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games Official Facebook page.

He snatched two gold medals for the men’s Gunshu and Daoshu events of Wushu on Tuesday.

“People in his team were in tears after his victory and those were not just tears of joy,” the caption read.

Marvelo later learned of his father’s demise after winning the gold.

A photo shows Marvelo in tears.

He dedicates his gold medal to his country and to his father.

In his Instagram stories hours after his win, he immediately flew back to Indonesia and let his father wear his medal.
