Filipina graduates summa cum laude in Hawaii University

A 21 year-old Filipina, who took up a degree in Bachelor of Science in Public Health minor in Ilocano Studies garnered a grade point average of 3.98 to graduate summa cum laude at the University of Hawaii in Manaoa.

Reschi Karla Ramo, who’s family moved to the United States when in 2011, graduated last May and went back to the Philippines to celebrate her success with relatives and friends.

“I feel really, really proud of myself. This makes all the hardwork, sacrifices and sleepless nights for the past 4 years worth it. I am happy because I am one of the Filipinos who finished a bachelor’s degree,” she told ABS-CBN News.

Ramo was a consistent honor student when she was young. The student said she had a hard time studying abroad.

“I experienced discrimination especially when I was just new in Hawaii. Even if I know the right answer during recitations, I would choose not to raise my hand because I fear that my classmates would make fun of me,” she said.

She survived by focusing her energy on studying.

“I always remind myself of my family – of what they taught me, which is to study hard and just focus on my studies. Education is deeply rooted in my mind and the importance of it is inculcated in my well-being,” Ramo said. (TN)
