Beyond TV glamor, real-life seafarers hurdle training programs

A visit to a maritime training center that has about 100 enrollees, revealed that aspiring seafarers are required to undergo basic safety training and water survival training to prepare them to face and survive various emergency situations such as fire and other maritime mishaps.

The popular show aired over GMA Network, One of the Baes, showcase actors playing seafarers undergoing various tests and training.

A GMA News report provides the details of the difficulties aspiring seafarers have to undergo.

The students are also taught how to conduct search and rescue operations inside a burning vessel and how to douse fires on a boat.

Aspirants who aim to become a cook or a receptionist aboard a ship are also required to undergo the training before they can obtain a Seaman’s Book, which is the equivalent of a working visa.
