My world stopped when he confessed

When we fall in love, it’s easy to fall into the emotional trap, when reason goes out the window and everything seems right with our partner. It’s only when it’s too late, that we realize we should have been more careful—no matter how much we love them.

Reyza Hista Montilla, an OFW in the UAE, was one of the netizens who participated in a survey conducted by The Filipino Times in its Tanong ng Bayan segment which asked: Would you have your fiancé background checked for their marital status or would you trust them 100 percent?

Mantilla answered that she would do a background check because she was almost duped by her ex-partner, whom she met in Saudi.

According to her, they were both OFWs in Saudi when they met. She said that when they got together, they immediately made plans about getting married in the Philippines.

“We even planned to apply in Taiwan and Poland because he said the benefits there for families are good. He even said I can use his family name when we get married,” she said.

Mantilla said that when the man went to the Philippines, he did not contact her for about two months, and that was when she decided to surprise him by going home.

“When we met, a lot of things changed. Dati sinasabi niya ipapakilala niya ako sa nanay niya pero nung umuwi ako, hindi naman nangyari,” she said.

Mantilla noted that it was only when the man got sick and she insisted on visiting him that he admitted he is indeed married with a kid.

“Pinipilit ko na puntahan siya pero tinatanggihan ako, kaya naman inaway ko baka kako may asawa siya. At doon tumigil ang mundo ko when he confessed that he is married and they have one kid,” she said.

She advised everyone to check their partner’s marital status with the Philippine Statistics Authority since it is now easy to get a Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) online.

“Dapat lang na ipa-check ang partner kasi less hassle na ang online appointment ngayon sa NSO (National Statistics Office, now called PSA),” she said.
