Pinay composer receives nomination from Hollywood Music in Media Awards

A 26-year-old Filipina composer, Jamie Pangan, was recently nominated in the Contemporary Classical/Instrumental category of the Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

This is her for original composition with the title ‘Farewell’. The young Pinay recently received her master’s degree in Music in Screen Scoring at the University of Southern California (USC).

“The Hollywood Music in Media Awards honors original music in visual media around the globe, including TV, video games, trailers, commercial advertisements, documentaries, and special programs,” the award-giving body said in a statement.

Past winners include Lady Gaga (A Star is Born), Max Richter (Mary Queen of Scots) and Oscar winner and Danny Glover aka Childish Gambino collaborator Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther).

“I was surprised because I did not expect I could possibly get in. But it never hurts to try. ‘Farewell’ was a music composition for my capstone at USC. Each year, the program requires its students to compose for a 65-piece orchestra and we could use any scene from an existing movie to rescore to. In my case, I wanted to do a sad piece and chose a scene from Harry Potter where Dumbledore died. This was my inspiration for the composition,” Jaimie shared.

The Pinay composer said that she studied the different stages of grief in order to come up with an original piece.

The musical pieces are judged based on melody, overall composition, and lyrics when applicable.
