77-year-old woman holds new record as the oldest to set sail solo, nonstop, and unassisted

After a failed attempt in 2017, Jeanne Socrates finally proved that no failure nor age could stop her from achieving her goal.

Her arrival at Royal Victoria Yacht Club in Canada on Saturday afternoon marked her almost one year voyage at sea and made her the oldest person to sail around the world from North America solo, nonstop and unassisted.

In 2017, Socrates was forced to stop after she broke her neck and ribs.

That didn’t stop her from even wanting to go further.

The 77-year-old Socrates documented her whole journey since she left Canada on October 3, 2018.

She was aboard the SV Nereida when she finally came home. Her boat’s name taken after Nereids, handmaidens of Poseidon, of ancient Greek mythology.

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club posted photos and videos of Socrates’ arrival on Facebook.

They congratulated her for her success.

According to them, the previous record was held by Minoru Saito, was 71 then when he completed the journey in 2005.
