The story of 2018 TFT Awards Educator of the Year Dr. Nino Decenorio captured the hearts of netizens, particularly fellow Filipino teachers – with his journey from being a public school teacher in General Santos City to being among the leaders of an international educational institution here in the UAE.

Fast forward to a year later, he once again rose through the ranks after winning his TFT Award and was recently hailed as Senior Vice President of the Bath Spa University UAE in Ras Al Khaimah, an international campus of BSU from England in the United Kingdom.

However, even if he’s already part of the decision makers of the said university, Dr. Decenorio never forgot his roots back in Mindanao, stating that his win of the TFT Awards further fueled his drive to help children back home. “At present, I am collaborating with education institutions in Mindanao supporting indigenous children to have access for suitable educational materials and even provide them school supplies. Furthermore, I also assist educational institutions both in the Philippines and the UAE to uphold the three pillars of education, which are research, community extension, and instruction,” shares Decenorio.

A bittersweet victory

Not everything was smooth sailing for Dr. Decenorio however as tragedy struck his family in an unfortunate circumstance. “My win was a bittersweet victory as after a few days, my mother passed away. What I remember was the fact that she was very proud while on her death bed, listening to my news about my TFT triumph. I saw in her eyes how proud she was of my achievement,” said Decenorio as he reminisced the look of his mother’s face when she knew that her son won the accolade.

Since then, people from all walks of life approached Dr. Decenorio to seek guidance in his field particularly Filipino parents who were at the crossroads on deciding whether or not their kids should continue their studies here in the UAE. “There are immense opportunities that went along the away and have continuously come primarily in the field of career and educational counseling. Also, there are hundreds of Overseas Filipino parents who approached and continued approaching me to seek guidance for the education of their children,” shared Decenorio.

A priceless recognition

Decenorio said that winning the award not only gave his credentials a boost – he also took the opportunity to open more opportunities for Filipino students to enjoy scholarships here in the UAE. “I enjoyed the trust and confidence of Bath Spa University UAE Management. By the grace of God, I was able to open more scholarship opportunities to all Filipino students who want to have a world-class degree without hurting their budget or savings,” beams Decenorio.

The 2018 TFT Awardee also said that the award gives immeasurable distinctions that are truly priceless: “Respect, credibility, and integrity are some of the significant benefits of being hailed as the TFT Educator of the Year. They are priceless. You cannot buy them even if you have mountains of gold.”

He hopes that the 2019 TFT Awards will put that much-needed spotlight on his fellow educators who are making a difference in their respective fields through their own advocacies, initiatives, and achievements. “To all educators across the emirates, it is high time to come out from your shells. It is an appropriate time to trumpet your unsung good deeds, and by doing so, you can replicate your inspiring works. I urge you to nominate those educators who are diamonds in a haystack,” said Decenorio.
