DUBAI: A team of Dubai-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) – three members of whom where recipients of The Filipino Times Awards – was in Maputo, Mozambique to conduct personal development workshop attended by over 100 fellow OFWs, mostly engaged in the education sector.

The outreach was on invitation of the Filipino Community in Mozambique (FILCOMOZ).

There were also other nationalities who were colleagues of some Filipino teachers who attended the workshop which had seven modules. Most of the 400 Filipinos in Mozambique are teachers where majority are based in the capital Maputo. The farthest place where Filipinos teach is Pemba which is almost 2,500 kilometers by land.

Multi-doctorate, multi-awarded and 2016 TFT Educator of the Year awardee Dr. Rommel Pilapil Sergio of the Canadian University of Dubai delivered three talks on Classroom Management, Emotional Intelligence, and Mental Health.

Entrepreneur, head of the Alumni Association of the Ateneo School of Government’s Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship Program in the UAE and 2018 TFT Entrepreneur of the Year nominee, Cristina Calaguian presented a Happiness Program in the Workplace and Financial Literacy.

Freelance broadcast journalist, advocate of Filipino Excellence Rachel Salinel and 2015 TFT Journalist of the Year awardee gave tips on how to deliver an effective talk in public, while PR consultant and socio-civic leader Art Los Banos discussed approaches on managing conflicts.

The day-long workshop was a major program of the FILCOMOZ under the presidency of Robert De Guzman, a computer science teacher at Grandeur International School. It was coordinated by Xavier International School owner Mercedes Calderon. Both schools accommodate Mozambicans, Filipinos and other nationalities.

While covering for The Filipino Channel of ABS-CBN in May 2017 on her first visit to Maputo, Salinel found out that Filipino teachers who are highly regarded in the country needed some enhancements and motivation being away from their respective families. Calderon hosted Salinel that year with Los Banos who established Couples for Christ in the capital through the Holy Cross Church.

The four speakers were commended by Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerard Angeles during the “Night of Stars” gathering on August 11 where members of FILCOMAZ showed their talents in solo, duet and chorale singing, as well as in dancing. Also present at the event was Honorary Consul Donald Tulcidas, a Mozambican.

“I am beyond blessed to meet these extraordinary individuals who have upgraded my skills in the different aspects of my life – professional, emotional, social and spiritual. My happy tank is overflowing,” shared Dessa Lazarte of Woodrose International School which has a branch in Pemba.
