Majority of UAE residents leave air-conditioning units open at home

A new study has revealed that around two-thirds of UAE residents do not turn off their air-conditioning units at home even though they are in the office.

The survey, conducted by air conditioning solutions company ‘Taqeef’, further showed that ACs are left turned on in empty apartments for an average of 11.7 hours a week.

Residents also admitted on the survey that they leave their ACs even though they are travelling, socializing, and even when shopping during humid and summer days.

More than half of the respondents or 69% said that they prefer leaving ACs open while at work.

Most of the respondents were aged between 16-24 years.

‘Not Cool’

Some groups, however, find these habits alarming and a potential waste of energy if the trend continues.

“These findings are significant, highlighting an alarming trend of energy wastage caused by AC misuse. While this is obviously an environmental concern, it also emphasises the need for further education and awareness — particularly following the urgency placed on combating climate change at the recent Abu Dhabi Climate Meeting,” Tariq Al Ghussein, Taqeef Chairman and CEO said.

And since August is one of the hottest months in UAE, Taqeef is launching ‘AC awareness month’ to reduce the need of AC in households.

“There is a real opportunity for us to make smarter energy choices in the region, both at home and in work, to improve our environmental impact,” furthered Al Ghussein.
