Elon Musk’s Neuralink to enable brains to directly connect with smartphones

Elon Musk, known for his ground-breaking works on Tesla, SpaceX, and Hyperloop is currently developing a new brain-machine interface that will soon link users directly with their smartphones and devices.

The technology investor, entrepreneur and engineer envisions the company, ‘Neuralink’ to be able to help humans “achieve a kind of symbiosis with artificial intelligence,” as per a report from Big Think.

Neuralink recently presented its first steps to the public towards building the brain-machine interface that it has been working on for the past two years. The reveal showcased thin, flexible ‘threads’ that record brain activity that’s connected with a machine that inserts the threads to the brain.

Musk now aims to build a workable interface from the prototype that will help a brain to control a smartphone or computer and make the process as safe and establish a routine operation similar to the Lasik surgery for the eyes.

As of press time, Neuralink has only been tested on animals where during the experiments, the company used a surgical robot to embed into a rat brain a tiny probe with about 3,100 electrodes on some 100 flexible wires or “threads” — each of which is significantly smaller than a human hair.
