8 Filipino math wizards win medals in Bulgaria

Another set of brilliant young minds of Filipinos brought pride to the country as they bagged numerous awards during the 2019 Mathematics Without Borders (MWB) in Nessebar, Bulgaria.

The eight Filipino math wizards, namely Christian Gendrano, Grade 7 student of De La Salle Santiago – Zobel; Zion Skye Earl Carmelo Uy and Rohan Gerald Herrera (Ateneo de Manila Grade School), Harry Gerald Perez (De La Salle – Lipa Integrated School), Renzterton R. Sibal (Lourdes School of Mandaluyong), Mi Jung Pak and John Henry T. Marquez (Philippine Science High School) and Beatriz Lucia Rodriguez (Southville International School and Colleges) bring home an array of gold, silver and bronze medals, trophies and awards from the competition.

Gendrano got the Absolute Winner Cup for being the most successful contestant based on his elimination and final round scores. He also captured the Math Star of the Tournament, a gold medal for individual contest, a bronze medal for team contest, and the MWB Gold Cup, as per a report from Inquirer. 

These students competed with other young minds from Romania; Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Republic of North Macedonia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Malta, Uzbekistan, and host Bulgaria.

The team was led by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST- SEI).
