‘Baby Aki’ and father selling banana cakes for liver transplant now in India

Netizens poured their support to ‘Baby Aki’ after finding out his story and his father, Antonio Detaban.

Aki was diagnosed with Biliary Artresia, a congenital disease wherein one of the liver’s bile ducts is narrow or absent.

The photos of Aki’s father went viral when his father was seen with his son selling some banana cakes in Calamba, Laguna in a Facebook post by his wife and Aki’s mother, Jabee Galindes last March.

With outpouring support from all around the world, the family flew to India last May 20 for a liver transplant operation.

“May gamot siyang kinailangang i-take kasi base po sa resulta ng HLA namin, may mismatching po kami sa dugo na baka mag-cause ng rejection niya sa atay ko kapag hindi po muna ginamot,” Aki’s mother told Inquirer.net in an exclusive interview.

Aki celebrated his birthday this month in the Indian hospital. His father couldn’t pass the test of being Aki’s donor because of complications.

The mother said that President Rodrigo Duterte and Senator-elect Bong Go paid for their accommodation. Nancy Binay and an anonymous donor paid for the travel fares.

Aki’s parents were extremely grateful for the support to their little angel’s operation.
