Why it is important to have your children do house chores

DUBAI: Here is one good reason why parents should never give up pushing their children to do house chores: The kids will more likely become successful in life.

This, according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, former dean of freshmen at Stanford University who told Tech Insider that by making children take out the garbage, for instance, or do their own laundry, “they realize they have to do the work of life to be part of life.”

She said, and as Tech Insider put it, “the transformation from diligent kid to successful adult begins with chores.”

Lythcott-Haims, author of “How to Raise an Adult” added: “If kids aren’t doing the dishes, it means someone else is doing that for them.

“And so, they’re absolved of not only the work, but of learning that work has to be done and that each one of us must contribute for the betterment of the whole.”

Lythcott-Haims, who is doing a research on the matter, which she based on a Harvard Grant Study, said she believes that kids who grew up doing chores will be better employees who have the skills to collaborate with co-workers, will be more empathetic towards others and can take on tasks independently.

At 75 years and counting, the study has made landmark findings about the factors that drive human happiness, Tech Insider said. One of those factors: people who did more chores and housework in childhood are happier later in life.

Business Insider, which runs Tech Insider, is an American financial and business news website operating international editions in the UK, Australia, China, Germany, France, South Africa, India, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Northern Europe, Poland, Spain and Singapore.
