DUBAI: Group weddings held almost every week at the Philippine Consulate have usually been about high school sweethearts or couples who had endured long distance relationships.
Recently though, a couple stood out: 45-year-old Vien Espiritu and fiancée, Precila Magpantay. Espiritu is a carpenter; Magpantay, a household service worker.
A stand-out because couples getting married were, most of the time, professionals, if not burger joint or mall shop crews and staff.
Espiritu and Magpantay met at a congregation where everybody would egg them on as something like the love team of the year, or so.
“Nagkakatuksuan sa church,” said Magpantay. The “tuksuan” went on and after two years, the love birds found themselves among 26 couples attending a group wedding officiated by Vice Consul Marianne Bringas.
Despite their age, they swore they don’t have “sabit,” or are married back home.
Magpantay said she arrived in Dubai 11 years ago; Espiritu said he planed in two years back.
