Bohol-based chocolate makers strike gold in Academy of Chocolate Awards 2019

Bohol-based chocolate makers has placed the province on the world stage as the confectionery to watch for as it has been recognized by the London based Academy of Chocolate Awards 2019.

Dalareich 100% Unsweetened Chocolate, a product of Dalareich Foods, has won a Gold Award in the international competition that include categories on bars and filled chocolates to drinking chocolate, spreads and packaging.

Experts also consider start up ventures, forward-looking entrepreneurs, and innovators in the industry.

The products pass through scrutiny as to products’ appearance, depth of aroma and flavor, length and complexity and from these characteristics are separated by category to gold, silver, and bronze winners.

Dalareich Foods’ win is the first time for the country in the international competition.

“If you consider our vision-mission, (with this win), we are getting there,” said Dalareich Polot, proprietor of Dalareich Food Products.

She was referring to the company’s “Vision: To be the best chocolate maker that will put Philippines, especially Bohol to the World’s Chocolate Map. and Mission: To produce world-class chocolates made from the highest quality and locally sourced cacao through education, innovation and sustainable production.”

Polot underscored, 100% Unsweetened Chocolate is a common chocolate product that is part of everyday food fare, the so-called tableya or concentrated chocolate that is made into hot and sweet chocolate drink that is paired with suman or rice cakes.
The win is an opportunity for Filipinos to appreciate the tableya, she added.

A computer engineer by profession, Dalareich said she decided to help her parents with the business as it is this venture that sent her and her siblings to school.

For this particular competition, it was first time for Dalareich Foods to send an entry to London.

And late Tuesday afternoon, the results were announced and Dalareich 100% Unsweetened Chocolate (Tableya) got the Gold award under drinking chocolate together with Auro Chocolate.

Other Filipino-led companies such us Malagos Chocolate, Theo and Philo, got silver and bronze awards.

According to the Academy of Chocolate, there were many participants for this year’s Chocolate Awards – featuring producers from India, Slovakia and Vanuatu for the very first time – alongside products from more established chocolate making countries.

Dalareich credits her mother, Elsa, who “really founded the Dalareich Tablea.”

She is proud that the chocolates that the family made, sold with the proceeds used to send them to school has won a Gold award in an international competition.

“It’s just amazing and (I’m) proud of that tableya,” she said.
