Filipina freelance photog bags international award for drug war coverage

A Filipina photojournalist is this year’s recipient of the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award.

Eloisa Lopez, who works freelance was commended for her coverage of the Duterte administration’s drug war.

After graduating from the De La Salle University, Lopez worked as a correspondent for the Philippine Daily Inquirer – specializing in photo stories on human rights, women and religion.

The Manila-based photojournalist has been covering and documenting the Duterte administration’s anti-drug campaign that saw almost nightly killings of alleged drug suspects.

In 2017, she continued covering the same beat for online news website, Rappler, before joining Reuters as a contributing photographer covering news around the country.

Elisa Lees Muñoz, executive director of the International Women’s Media Foundation, said this year’s IWMF recognized the three powerful freelance women photojournalists.

Lopez, along with this year’s honorable mentions–American photojournalist Mary Calvert and Saudi Arabian freelance photojournalist Tasneem Alsultan–will be honored in a ceremony at the residence of German Ambassador Emily Haber in Washington D.C. in June.

Lopez will also receive a $20,000 prize.

The Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award honors brave women journalists who document under-reported stories in challenging or underserved environments while capturing poignant moments of humanity.

The award was created in honor of German Associated Press photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2014.
