Pinoy movies make a debut in Saudi cinemas

The long wait is over. Saudi-based Filipinos overseas workers no longer have to wait for digital files to be available online as they now watch local movies on the big screen.

According to a report by ABS-CBN, the General Commission for Audiovisual Media, the regulatory board for theater in Saudi Arabia, has given the approval to show Tagalog movies in its cinemas for the first time.

The GCAM said the release of the film represented a good opportunity to strengthen ties between the two nations, allowing new opportunities in the entertainment sector for Saudis and Filipinos living in the Kingdom.

On Friday evening, laughter from hundreds of OFWs filled a jam-packed movie screening of the movie “Jack em Popoy,” starring Coco Martin, Vic Sotto, and Maine Mendoza.

Tagalog movies will have English and Arabic subtitles for non-Filipino moviegoers.

Movie houses were banned in the kingdom 35 years ago but reopened on April 18 as part of the modernization drive by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
