2016 TFT Filmmaker of the Year Idelyn ‘Aileen’ Amparo now has another feather to wear in her hat of filmmaking accomplishments as her film ‘Beauty in Darkness’ was selected as part of the shortlist for the prestigious Emirates Short Film Festival (ESFF) 2019 to be held from February 24 to 28 at the VOX Grand Cinema at the Grand Hyatt.

In an interview with The Filipino Times, Amparo explains that her film, ‘Beauty in Darkness’ exposes the real situation of people living through tough circumstances and their journey to live their daily lives as it shows the inner resilience of Filipinos. “Beauty in Darkness is a documentary about the people living in extreme challenges and in contrast, highlights the beauty of the human spirit,” said Amparo.

Idelyn ‘Aileen’ Amparo won the 2016 TFT Filmmaker of the Year Award.

Amparo recalls the time when she shot the film as a reflection of her own inner challenges where she managed to channel the negative vibes into something creative and inspiring. “Looking back, I realized that I have produced ‘Beauty in Darkness’ because I am easily prone to depression and I have always wondered and secretly admire human beings especially Filipinos on how they can stay happy, hopeful, and even go out of their way just to help someone else even if it means sacrificing their next meal despite of the hardships that afflicted our nation for so long,” shares Amparo.

The film will be on screens February 26 from 12:00 pm onwards during the festival.

Fellow Filipino filmmakers in shortlist

Apart from Amparo, other fellow Filipino filmmakers included in the shortlist of 27 movies for the ‘Regional Films Category‘ are “Sa Anino ng kalasag” (Philippines), by John Lloyd Moralda, “Bisberas (Eve)” (Philippines), by Ralph Quincena, “Ang Pagpatay sa mga kuliglig” (Philippines), by John Lloyd Moralda and Bobby De Veyra and “Kapatid”, (Dubai, UAE), by Mike Nerpiol.

The Filipino filmmakers join the ranks of the shortlisted films with directors and fellow filmmakers coming from countries such as Portugal, India, Egypt, Belgium, Syria, Oman, Morocco, Bahrain, Italy and the UAE.

Apart from the Regional Films Category, severa; Filipinos also join the shortlist for the ‘Professional Films Category’ namely “OFW Diaries”, by 2018 TFT Filmmaker of the Year Melon Quinzon Perez, “Khaled”, by Patrick Fronda and “Heart Between Us”, a film by Gilbert Belleza and Jed Hombrebueno.

In addition, several Pinoy filmmakers also join the ranks of the shortlisted entries for ESFF’s ‘Young Filmmakers Category‘ including “PR659: A one Way Flight Whim”, by Steve Cardona, “One Percent”,  by Bethoven M. Filomeno, “Laro”, by Mike Nerpiol, and ‘This is my story”, by Jules Quirante.

Founded in 2013, the Emirates Short Film Festival (ESFF) was created out of a passion from creating a short film festival in Emirates Airline and Group which then extended to invite UAE-based filmmakers and artists to participate and submit their masterpieces. Since then, the non-profit film festival has received more than 500 plus short films and award-winning content. The ESFF is headed by their CEO and Film Fest Director, Ron Awa.

Winners of this year’s ESFF will be announced at a gala and awarding night set to take place on March 2, 2019.
