Why do most OFWs want to settle in Canada?

DUBAI: Canada is a place topping most overseas Filipino worker’s bucket list – and for a lot of logical reasons at that.

“Filipinos who immigrate to Canada either as a Permanent Resident or as a citizen, have access to all of the country’s social programs such as free health care, free education for children until the end of high school, and so on,” explained Atty. Julie Beeton, Canadian immigration lawyer

She added: “They can also access all of the newcomer services such as organizations that help new immigrants to find jobs, settle in their community and find accommodation.”

Beeton said the other reason that many Filipinos are interested in becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident or citizen is that their children will pay local tuition fees at Canadian universities rather than international fees.

“International fees can be more than two-thirds higher than local tuition fees,” she said.

Beeton said that as of the 2016 Canadian Census, 851,410 Filipinos were living in Canada.  In 2017, 2,685 Filipinos immigrated to Canada through the Express Entry System.
