Who would have thought? A farmer’s son who used to cross gushing rivers just to attend school was chosen by the International School Manila to go to Massachusetts and enjoy a full scholarship at the prestigious Harvard University.
Aside from the free tuition, Blanco will also enjoy free accommodation, allowance, clothing and plane ticket.
How it began
Blanco is seventh among nine siblings, born of a vegetable and fruit farmer at the foots of Sierra Madre Mountains. He was first a beneficiary of GreenEarth Heritage Foundation and took up bible lessons and computer literacy classes. With the mentorship of the said foundation, Blanco qualified to join the International School of Manila in 2012.
He graduated in 2017 and was offered not just one scholarship, but four namely Harvard College, the King Scholarship of Dartmouth College, the Freeman-Asian Scholarship of Wesleyan University and New York University-Abu Dhabi.
Blanco chose what some of us could only dream of — Harvard University.
“This is an honor and momentous occasion for us all who have been bound together by our mission/ vision. The Lord has lifted up the entire rural poor community that we serve at GreenEarth, of which Rom is a part of. With Rom’s enormous blessings, the Lord has shown us a mere glimpse of what He has in store for our people at GreenEarth ahead. The best is yet to come!” GreenEarth said on their website.
Blanco is set to graduate in 2022.
