Bad breath? Don’t fret – there’s a way out

Although halitosis or bad breath is frequently caused by dental problems, other causes of bad breath are also linked to systemic health problems as well, said Dr. Wilbert Oscar Fernandez, a practicing general dentist at Klinika Maharlika’s Dubai and Abu Dhabi branch.

Oral sources of bad breath, he said, include cavities which should be filled, gum disease such as bleeding and red inflamed gums, unclean tongue.

In fact, Fernandez said, “even people without teeth can have bad breath too if they do not clean their dentures.”

Moreover, he said diabetes, certain lung conditions, and liver disease can also make your breath smell bad as well as medications that can cause dry mouth.

Lastly, food that you eat can also make your breath smell. These include onion, garlic, fish, and caffeine that can cause dry mouth, he said.

Fernandez said there are three oral health steps to avoid bad breath:

• First: Brush and floss at least twice a day. Don’t forget to brush your tongue as well!
• Second: gargle with antibacterial oral rinse.
• Third: Eat food that won’t smell your mouth.

And don’t forget to visit your dentist so they can spot any dental problems that may be associated with the way your breath smell
