OFW moms missing Christmas with their kids in PH share heartwarming stories

One of the moments that Overseas Filipino Workers miss the most about the Philippines is the Christmas season, as nothing beats spending the holidays together with family.

LBC Express released a touching story of OFWs who continue to struggle and sacrifice overseas to give their loved ones a better life back home.

Joelea Dequinon, who has been in the UAE for 9 years spent majority of her expat life giving care for other people’s children but missed the chance to take care of her own while they were still young. “First na inalagaan ko kambal sila, hanggang 3 years old. Yung mga anak ko nung maliit pa, hindi ko man lang maalagaan ng tama. And then nag aalaga ako para sa ibang tao,” shares Dequinon.

However, she also knows that this is part of the sacrifice she must make to give a more comfortable life for her kids: “Iniisip ko din na ‘paano ko mabubuhay ang mga anak ko kung hindi ako magta-trabaho?’

Dequinon said her kids really wish to see her this Christmas but she just said that she’ll send a package for their gifts since she couldn’t make it. “Gusto nila na makita ako pero okay lang kasi uuwi naman ako ng March – sabi ko mag antay na lang at mag pa-package naman ako.”

Honnee Azagra, a single mom who has spent 12 years in the UAE, recalls that she decided to head to the Middle East in 2007 to look for greener pastures also provide for her kids’ education back home.

She said that she struggled especially during her first few years as she had to leave her youngest at a very tender age. “Mahirap dahil syempre malayo ka sa family ko, sa mga anak ko. Iniwan ko yung bunso ko 6 months old pa lang. Iniwan ko siya, baby pa – para lang mabigyan sila ng magandang kinabukasan,” shares Azagra.

Today, she continues to support her kids back home by sending balikbayan boxes and packages that her kids wish for to fulfill their needs and support their skills and talents. “Usually po ang hinihiling nila, mahilig po sila sa gadgets like cameras, laptop – sinusuportahan ko po yan dahil mahilig sila sa photography, video editing,” said Azagra.
