Many Filipinos aspire to work overseas where higher salaries or better job opportunities await. As different nations demand different metrics in processing foreign employment applications, one sure standard that the United Kingdom requires is the IELT or the International English Language Testing System.

According to 25-year-old Filipino nurse Charles Castaneda, his dream of working as a healthcare professional in the UK was made possible after he took the IELTS.

IELTS is an international standardized test of English language proficiency specifically for non-native speakers of the language, and is accepted by more than 10,000 institutions worldwide. If you’re dreaming of working in the UK, taking the IELTS is a requirement you need to fulfill.

The 25-year-old dreams to jumpstart his career as a nurse in the UK, according to a report by the Manila Standard. In order to push through with his plans to work abroad, he needed to take the IELTS among the many requirements he needed to comply with.

At first, he viewed the test as a challenge. “But the more I prepared for it, I realized it was more of a bridge that will bring me closer to pursuing my dream of becoming a nurse in the UK,” he said.

An IELTS taker is required to get a band score of not less than 7 across all the sections of the test. This is to prove that he or she is able to converse and communicate in English, which is important in English-speaking countries.

“As a healthcare professional, being able to communicate well in English is essential because we deal with people’s health and well-being,” he said.

Charles is grateful that his aspiration to work in the UK is coming to a reality in just a few months, thanks to passing his IELTS test.
