PH wins bronze in World Mask Dance

Adorned with colorful feathers, flowers, and sequins, the most colorful festival in the Philippines MassKara Festival bags third place in the recently concluded World Mask Dance Competition in South Korea.

Among the 13 countries that participated in the said competition, the MassKara Festival dancers of Bacolod City succeeded in bringing home the bronze medal. Competing countries include Russia, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Israel, China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.

The contest was one of the key highlights of the Andong Mask Dance Festival in South Korea which concluded last October 7, 2018.

According to a report by the Philippine Information Agency, Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia lauded the news in boosting tourist attraction in the city.

“We personally saw them in action in Andong and we knew that our talented and dedicated dancers will capture the hearts and admiration of so many. We are truly proud of our MassKara Festival,” Mayor Leonardia said.

He also said that the international victory’s timing came perfectly in line with the opening of the 39th MassKara Festival in Bacolod City this October.

The word “MassKara” is a portmanteau of the Spanish words mass (crowd of people) and cara (faces) that means a multitude of faces. The masks depict smiling faces as Bacolod City is dubbed as “The City of Smiles”.
