How to keep Christmas spirit while abroad

All Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) want one thing during the holiday season, and that is to spend Christmas with their loved ones.

However, because of obligations at work or expensive plane tickets, not every one gets the chance to go home in time for the occasion.

For those who will be spending Christmas away from their families or loved ones this year, here are five simple ideas to help you enjoy the season:

1. Create a Christmas mood at home
As Middle Eastern countries have restrictions or strict rules toward public display of Christmas items, many OFWs in the area opt to decorate minimal decor indoors. You can also choose to sing along to Filipino Christmas songs or play them at home.

2. Say ‘thank you’
One way to feel the Christmas spirit is by expressing gratitude for everything you have. As the season is the time of thanksgiving, thank everyone including your friends, family at home, or colleagues. You may also go to church to thank God for blessings.

3. Be someone’s Santa Claus
As early as October, take time to shop for your loved ones at home and send them to the Philippines in advance. Packages and parcels tend to take up time in getting delivered, so it’s best to prepare ahead. You can also send heartfelt letters with it.

4. Take it slow at work
If you’ll be required to work on Christmas, one thing you can give yourself is a pause. Don’t push yourself too much during the day and don’t overwork if it can be avoided.

5. Celebrate with fellow OFWs
Wherever in the world, Filipinos can and will always find a way to celebrate Christmas. Invite your friends to celebrate Christmas parties the Filipino way or ask around if there is any, so you won’t feel homesick.
