‘Don’t go through the experience alone, reach out’

Gie Drew easily is a fighter – from all corners, of what it takes to be one, her peers say.

Drew founded The Shades of Pink, a support group formed by Filipinos, who have gone through the fight against cancer, to raise awareness on the risks of contracting the dreaded disease, with the assistance from members who are doctors, nurses and other medical professionals.

First diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, Drew underwent treatment after which life went back with its daily routine – but unfortunately not for long. “Years passed with yearly check-ups and no problem at all,” Drew said, “not until April this year when I was diagnosed again with cancer.”

At the time of writing, Drew was in the United Kingdom to undergo double mastectomy following several chemo sessions at NMC Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

To cancer survivors and fellow fighters, Drew has this to say: “I suggest not going through the experience alone, reach out to your loved ones, fellow survivors or even support groups.”

“Breast cancer is not only for women and it’s even a challenging stigma for men as they lack awareness. Many people are unaware that men can also have cancer. There should be more exposure in public, social media and medical field. Do not be embarrassed. It’s time to educate the people. Survivors should speak of the challenges they faced and how they survived the battle,” she added.
