Some quick facts about breast cancer that everyone should know

The chances of survival of those who suffer from breast cancer, especially those in early stages, are higher than other types of cancer. If detected at stage one, the chances of survival are between 95 to 100 percent. The chances of survival reduce to 86 percent if detected at stage two, and becomes 57 per cent only at stage three.

Signs to look for:

• swelling in the armpit
• lump in the breast or underarm
• pain or tenderness in the breast or lump
• indentation on the breast
• a rash around one or both the nipples
• any change in the size, texture, color or temperature of the breast
• unusual discharge from the nipple
• veins on the breasts that were not there previously
• upper back pain
• soreness, redness and/or itchiness in the nipples
