OFW children tend to go back to their parents upon graduation

So, what do OFW children do once they finish college? They tend to go back to the country where their parents work to reunite with them, UAE school principals said.

OFW parents send their kids home in the Philippines after finishing secondary education in the UAE for them to pursue college.

“As per observation, there is a considerable number of Philippine schools overseas alumni who prefer to return and work in the same country where their parents are currently working as OFWs,” said Pevwarti L. Sursigis, OIC-principal at Far Eastern Private School

“Since most of them are considered third culture kids, the idea of sending their parents home and take their place is unlikely to happen. Many are returning and finding a job after completing their college education to be reunited with their loved ones in a country that they considered as their home,” Sursigis added.

Marivic Tagle-Santos, assistant principal for High School (Grades 7 to 12) at United International Private School (UIPS), for her part said: “We believe that the graduates, being of legal age and sound mind should be given the right and freedom to decide on matters affecting their future. This aspect should be a family discussion.

“However, if they decide to join their parents as OFWS, they can be part of the migration cycle of OFWS. After all, Filipinos are clannish and they take on the responsibility under the patriarchal or matriarchal system in the society that they live in.”
