Filipino Chefs shine at 1st MEA Chef Excellence Awards

by | Feature

Two young Filipino chefs bagged top recognitions at the recently held Middle East & Africa Chef Excellence Awards event. With 350 nominations in total, over 100 top chefs from the region have been awarded for their exemplary service and dedication in the hospitality industry.

Silver awardee for Hidden Gem of the Year went to 24-year old Antonette Ermino, Commis I, of JW Marriott Marquis Dubai. In just 3 years in the city, originally a Philosophy graduate, Chef Antonette who had no background in gastronomy and the hospitality industry, has achieved a lot of recognitions from JW Marriott Marquis Dubai as well as a number of institutions in the likes of SIAL, Gulfood and more.

“My sister who is a cake artist, helped me land an intern job at JW Marriott Marquis. I was assigned in the chocolate room then after six months, as I do not want to be confined in just one section I got transferred to garde manger (cold kitchen). Eight months later, I got a scholarship at The Emirates Culinary Guild and graduated top of the class – Chef of the Batch. Since then, good fortune came flooding in and just last year, December, I won in a standing ovation as Employee of the Month in the hotel. I just feel so blessed”.

Anthony Buensalido

Another young blood in the UAE, Commi1 Anthony Buensalido won the Gold Commi Chef of the Year award. From 15 chefs contending for the title, it went down to 6 finalists and Chef Anthony was the lucky one to take home the coveted gold. Chef Anthony has been working for three years in Al Jawaher Reception & Convention Centre, Sharjah.

Very much elated in winning the gold, he said “I am really thankful for the opportunity and support my company has given me. I really didn’t expect to win in this event. For our compatriots out there, keep up the good work, do well in your job and always work hard, for someday you’ll reap the fruits of your labor.“

Antonette Ermino

Chef Anthony has been joining several competitions within the UAE for years now, including Gulfood.

Hozpitality.com, an online website catering to the hospitality industry for 11 years, is the organizer of the Chef Excellence Award 2018.
