‘The kids suffer the most in toxic relationships’

“Ang nag sa-suffer the most kasi in the end, from a relationship that isn’t really working out, are the kids,” said Lou Olvido- Parroco, seasoned human resource director, life coach who also is hailed as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the World for 2017 by the Filipina Women’s Network (FWN).

“Yung mga bata who grew up in an abusive relationship have a high chance to imitate the abusive behavior they observed from their parents, making them dysfunctional and a liability to the society,” she added.

“So if you’re in a relationship that isn’t really working despite how much effort both of you put into it, it’s better that these couples be given the freedom from the bondage that they’re in and end their relationship officially.”

Irene Corpuz, 2016 The Filipino Times IT Professional of the Year, and Head of IT Security Section at an Abu Dhabi government entity, for her part said that “as someone who’s already celebrating 24 years of marriage and an active member of Couples for Christ, this would already tell you that I’m against divorce.”

“In general, I don’t like annulment and divorce – I fear that dadami ang broken families which is not good for a society.”

“Hindi lang ritual ang marriage,” for her part said Clarissa Calingasan, author and life coach at The John Maxwell Team, “it should be like an app.”

She added, referring to divorce as redemption from domestic violence: “They are right…instead of death by abuse, they want an exit strategy.

“There should be effort from both parties to do their best so that there’d be no incidents of domestic violence. In the first place there was no violence when they got married.”
