Former OFW in Middle East saves maid from public shaming of employer

In a social experiment conducted in different locations in Metro Manila, GMA News Channel program Good News wanted to see if someone would offer a helping hand to a maid being verbally abused and humiliated by her employer in public.

This was in line with the current plight of domestic helpers abroad.

The experiment staged an employer asking her maid about of one of the items she bought from a grocery store. When the supposed maid was not able to find it, the employer screamed at her.

The maid apologized but the employer refused to accept it and continued the telling off publicly.

This was when the maid began to cry and told her employer to just take the amount of the item she lost from her salary.

A woman passerby, who witnessed the scene, approached the two and told the employer not to shame the maid in front of other people.

When it was revealed to the woman that the scene is only a social experiment, she explained that she could relate to maids being verbally abused by their employers since she was able to experience the same first hand when she was still working as a domestic helper in the Middle East.

“Bilang katulong, nasasaktan din ako [para] sa kapwa ko katulong,” she shared. “Tao rin tayo eh. Tumutulong na nga tayo sa kanila tapos sila ganyan pa magtrato sa mga katulong nila, diba?”

Registered guidance counselor from the Far Eastern University Miguelito Relente said that, “Sa sitwasyon na ito, ipinapakita na hindi ibang tao si yaya o kasambahay.”
