Fil-Am actress Aina Dumlao is calling upon familiar relatives’ experiences in playing the groundbreaking role of a Filipina nurse in a long-running, television medical series in the United States.
Dumlao, in an interview with local media, said she recalled the experiences of her relatives — who worked as nurses in the US as she played the role of Gerlie Bernardo, a COVID-hit Filipina nurse who was featured in the final episode of Grey’s Anatomy’s 17th season.

Describing her seven relatives working as nurses in Chicago, Dumlao said one of them highlighted nurses working during the pandemic without being given even the stipulated hazard pay and asked her help in writing a letter in this regard to the concerned authorities.
After intimately learning of the Filipino-American nurses’ experiences during COVID-19 problems, Dumlao said she sought to convey this through acting as Gerlie, while infusing the loving spirit of Filipinos amid the pandemic into her character. (AW)
