Animated movie on Magellan draws flak from Filipino netizens

Animated Spanish movie on Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan has drawn much criticism in social media, particularly on Twitter for alleged inaccurate story telling.

The movie entitled, “Elcano and Magellan, The First Voyage Around the World” is about the circumnavigation of the world by Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano.

The synopsis as posted on the official website for the movie states that the film is about, “One of the most complete adventures ever told. A voyage to the unknown that started with Magellan in command and was concluded by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Storms, hunger, hostile tribes… Five ships sailed off from Seville. Three years later, only one of them managed to return, bringing their adventure full circle and finally proving that planet Earth is round.”

The movie is produced by Dibulitoon Studio, which is based in Spain, and specializes in animation for the youth.

The trailer has no dialogue, just sound effects and instrumental music.

It depicts Magellan’s adventures that include scenes in which he reached the Philippines, particularly Mactan island in Cebu province.

Elcano seemed to have a “princess” for a love interest while Lapu-Lapu seems to be portrayed as a villain in the film.

An article posted on Variety.com last Feb. 20, 2018, the movie is supposed to be scheduled to be released by 2019 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the start of Elcano and Magellan’s circumnavigation.
