Liza Soberano apologizes for ‘black face’ issue

Liza Soberano immediately apologized for her comments to netizens who called her out about a recent product endorsement.

On September 16, the actress posted a photo of her with an an Afro-look, wig and leopard top to endorse a fastfood chain’s newest product. Her look clearly resonates the image of black women style.

A netizen commented and said that Liza did a ‘blackface’ which is a form of discrimination.

Another said that Liza’s usage of an Afro wig is uncalled for.

“This is not any form of black face. It’s a costume just like how any other person would dress up if they were portraying a famous character. In this case its Mel B,” Liza commented.

Liza then followed it up with another comment, this time comparing the movie White Chicks where two black actors disguised as white women.

“So what do you call the Wayans siblings when they had to act like white girls? I think you dont understand the context of black face. A lot of women have afro’s it doesn’t specifically belong to one ethnicity,” she added.

Some netizens disagreed with Liza’s arguments insisting that what she had done was wrong.

“Before everything gets out of hand I would like to apologize for those affected by my comments about the whole ‘black face’ issue. It wasn’t of my intention to mock anyone of any culture or ethnicity,” Liza explained.

The actress promised to be more sensitive on topics that involve race, gender and equality issues.

“I understand that this is a sensitive topic and that I should’ve kept my mouth shut. For now on I will try to be more educated about matters like this to make sure I don’t make careless mistakes like this again in the future,” she said.
