Songwriter disappointed with Erik Santos’ rendition of his song

With a number of albums, concerts, awards, and a music career spanning 15 years to his name, Erik Santos has proven to be one of the biggest singers in the Philippines today but this does not spare him from a few controversies every now and then.

Just recently, Santos’ name got dragged in a social media rant by song composer Von De Guzman who said that the singer’s interpretation of his song left him disappointed.

De Guzman is the musical director and scorer of the upcoming film “Man and Wife” which will star Gabby Concepcion and Jodi Sta. Maria, while Santos was the one chosen to sing the movie’s theme song.

However, De Guzman said on social media that he did not like Santos’ version of his song because the singer “invented the melody” and gave the “wrong interpretation” to the song.

“And that is why the composer has to be there when his song is recorded. First note pa lang, mali na. Nag-imbento ng melody. Mali pa ang interpretation. It’s either hindi narinig ng record producer iyun or wala siyang pakialam. Eh rinaket n’yo lang, e,” De Guzman said.

“Hindi matatapatan ng sino man ang malasakit ng kompositor para sa musika niya,” he added.

After De Guzman’s social media rant, entertainment news website PEP.ph tried to get the full story and they found out that the producers tried to rush the recording of the theme song because it will be used for song scoring and online trailers.

Since the recording was rushed, director Laurice Guillen wanted to re-record it so that it will sound better in the film and intensify the scenes where it will be played.

However, Santos was in the United States and was not able to record the song once again since there was no more time. The film will be premiering on Wednesday and the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) still needed to review its final copy prior to its nationwide showing.

As a resolution, the film’s production had to look for another singer and eventually chose Dulce’s son, David Ezra.

Ezra recorded a new version of the song and it seems like the production approved of it.

Asia’s Diva Dulce even took to social media to share how proud she is of her son.

“I’m sooooo proud of you anak David Ezra. I had to pause it muna on first stanza kasi unang linya pa lang hagulgol na ako anobayan!!!!! Thank you Sir Von De Guzmán. Thank you Direk Laurice Guillen,” she said.
