Film director Mike de Leon calls ABS-CBN Ball “showbiz exploitation”

Veteran director Mike de Leon who is known for directing the films “Batch 81” and “Citizen Jake” took to social media to scrutinize the recently concluded ABS-CBN Ball.

Through a post on the Facebook page of “Citizen Jake”, de Leon criticized the grand event which took place on September 29 at Makati Shangri-La saying that it diverts people attention from issues that truly need attention such crime and poverty.

He even compared the ball to the lavish parties that former First Lady Imelda Marcos used to hold during the term of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

“Many people will not like this question but I have to ask it – In these dark times of murder and hunger, who really needs the ABS-CBN ball? Bread and Circuses again a la Imelda Marcos,” De Leon wrote on top of a photo of Vice Ganda and Ryan Bang which was during the event.

De Leon further said, “It should now become even more clear to thinking Filipinos that religion is no longer the opium of the people, it is showbiz. People now become more upset by a legitimate question about priorities (like this ball) than the political hellhole we all find ourselves in presently. We are truly damaged people. Kaawa-awang Pilipinas.”

The said post received a mixed bags of reactions from netizens and the director has responded to each one of them.
