Fil-Am composer made history after Oscar win

Filipino-American music composer Robert “Bobby” Lopez won his second Academy Award for his song “Remember Me” from the animated movie “Coco”.

‘Remember Me’ beat out Mary J. Blige’s “Mighty River” from “Mudbound”; Common and Diane Warren’s “Stand Up for Something” from “Marshall”; Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman”; and Sufjan Stevens’ “Mystery of Love” from “Call Me by Your Name.”

“The song ‘Remember Me’ was always part of the bedrock of our film. It’s a very beautiful song that tapped into some very real emotion,” director Lee Unkrich previously told Inquirer.

The Fil-Am composer said that the song “Remember Me” was partly inspired by his Filipino paternal grandmother who passed away when he and his wife were still writing the song.

However, when his name was announced as the winner, not a lot of people were aware that Lopez made Hollywood history.

Lopez is the first and only person to have won all four major award in Hollywood, namely Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT), more than once.

Celebrities in Hollywood dream of achieving the EGOT status because winning all four awards has been referred to as winning the “grand slam” of American show business.

Lopez has two Emmy Awards; three Grammy Awards; three Tony Awards; and two Oscars after the recently concluded Academy Awards.

Aside from reaching the EGOT status, Lopez is also the youngest person and the quickest to win all four awards.

Lopez was born in Manhattan yo an American mother and Filipino father. His father, Frank Lopez, hailed from San Enrique, Iloilo.

Netizens also congratulated Lopez for his historical achievement.
