Returning OFW dies, infects wife with AIDS

A Filipina housewife contracted acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) from her husband, a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who died of the same disease.

“Gina”, letter-sender in the Sept. 17 episode of “DJ Raqi’s Secret Files” on YES FM, narrated how her family was affected by her husband’s ailment.

Gina said upon her husband’s return to the Philippines after a two-year stint abroad, he was rushed into the hospital, where he was diagnosed with AIDS, an illness linked to people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

“Grabe ‘yung excitement ko nang malaman kong malapit na siyang bumalik ng Pilipinas. Then one time, may tumawag sa aking isinugod sa hospital ang mister ko. Ipinamalita sa akin ng Doctor na may AIDS ang asawa ko,” Gina said in her letter.

Furthermore, tests revealed that she has also contracted the disease.

She added that for a time she was contemplating on whether to sympathize or feel angry towards her sick husband, who eventually died.

A total of 72 OFWs were found to have acquired HIV/AIDS in June, majority of whom were infected through secual contact, the HIV/AIDS ART Registry of the Philippines (HARP) said.

In 2016, HARP said 233 of the 355 HIV-infected individuals in July to October 2016 are OFWs.
