Cartoon series to feature first Arab female superhero

A 22-year-old Emirati woman has created what could possibly be the first Arab female superhero that will star in a cartoon series to be aired later this year.

Fatma Al Muhairi’s superhero is called Emara, who is 19-year-old Moza when not transformed. Emara will feature in the five-episode cartoon “Emara: Emirates Hero”. Moza turns into Emara to fight crime in the streets of UAE.

Emara is clad in a navy blue headscarf, a green, white and gold costume, a cape lined with red, and a modernised golden burqa that is based on the traditional, metal-like cloth worn around the eyes by Emirati women, according to Gulf News.

Al Muhairi began working on “Emara: Emirates Hero” in December 2015. Helping her was a team of 13 full-time staff, aged 20-35, and an arsenal of freelance artists from Eating Star Studios. The team is mixed with only her as the female member. The cartoon producer is Yemeni, the art director is Lebanese, a Sudanese artist, and a Syrian artist.

Among the Emirati fans of Emara is 32-year-old Shaima Al Ali, who petitioned Netflix to air the cartoon online.
