DTI eyes Duterte to visit Dubai in March 2021

DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, chairman of the Philippine Organizing Committee for Expo 2020 Dubai, said the Philippines was given its own National Day and National Week to celebrate during the six-month exposition period.

The Philippine’s National Day will be on March 16, 2021 — in time for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Magellan to the Philippines.

The Philippine’s National Week will be on March 14-20, 2021.

“We will propose to Malacanang for the President to time his visit to Dubai either on the National Day or the National Week of the World Expo,” Lopez told reporters during the launch of the Philippine participation to Expo 2020.

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Dubai and other emirates are enjoined to participate during the Philippine National Week where the Philippine representations will be projected on the 360 degree screen of Al Wasl Plaza.

Al Wasl Plaza will be Dubai’s central pavilion, located at the heart of the Expo 2020 site. It’s dome will have a translucent shell that will have an immersive 360-degree projection surface, that can be viewed from inside as well as outside the pavilion.

Duterte so far has only visited three Middle East countries in 2017. He was earlier scheduled for a brief stopover in Dubai after completing his state visit to Russia also in 2017 but the trip was cancelled following the Marawi siege.

Since then, OFWs in the UAE have been requesting that the President visit the UAE where he enjoyed a landslide victory in 2016 presidential elections.
