First in UAE history: Two female judges appointed in Judiciary

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed two female judges at the Federal Judiciary as part of the overall initiative to recognize women’s integral role in the development and progress of the nation.

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa issued the appointment of Khadeeja Khamis Khalifa Al Malas and Salamah Rashid Salem Al Ketbi through Federal Decree No. 27 of 2019.

The two new judges are the first two Emirati women to hold judicial positions at the Federal level in the UAE.

The step reflects the country’s future approach aimed at achieving “full empowerment” of Emirati women, reported WAM.

In December 2018, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa said that women should occupy 50 percent seats of the UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) in next year’s elections, doubling the current 22.5 percent.

The directive aims to put UAE among the top countries in the world when it comes to representation of women in parliament.
