Filipino nurse to receive royal citation at Buckingham Palace

A Filipina nurse who responded to the London Bridge terror attack on June 3, 2017 is set to receive a British royal award at the Buckingham Palace on April 4.

Joy Ongcachuy, 45, will be conferred an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her significant service in community work, reported Rose Eclarinal of ABS CBN News.

The Filipina who hails from Misamis Oriental is the Lead Robotic Nurse at the Royal London Hospital.

She was one of the first respondents who treated injured victims of the attack on June 2017 involving a terrorist who plowed into the crowd and stabbed pedestrians on London Bridge.

All of the seven people who were taken to their hospital survived.

“It’s very overwhelming receiving that phenomenal award. It’s not an ordinary award that I received. I consider it as one of the best gifts that I have,” ABS CBN News quoted Ongcachuy as saying.

The Filipino started to work in the United Kingdom in 2002 as a scrub nurse.

OBE has been awarded to personalities like David and Victoria Beckham, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley and Eddie Redmayne, among others.

Ongcachuy lives in Stratford, London.
