Phil Embassy in UAE repatriates 67 distressed OFWs, mostly victims trafficking

by

The Philippine Embassy repatriated a total of 67 OFWs this May with 23 brought home on May 11 and 44 on May 23, a media advisory issued by the mission stated.

The embassy prepared the documents for their repatriation and made representations with immigration authorities in Abu Dhabi for the issuance of clearances and exit passes.

“The OFWs were mostly household service workers, who were victims of human trafficking and illegal recruitment. They ran away from their employers mainly due to maltreatment,” stated the advisory.

“While some left the Philippines through major airports to get to the UAE, others passed through seaports in Mindanao, or traveled as tourists, then passed by other neighboring countries before arriving in the UAE.  According to some of the distressed OFWs, they were recruited through social media,” it added.
