The National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) confirmed the detection of a minor earthquake measuring 1.6 in magnitude in the Dibba area of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The seismic activity, which was recorded in Fujairah, occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m. and was situated at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Though the tremor was classified as minor, many UAE residents reported feeling the ground shake, though there have been no reports of any significant effects or damage within the country. Social media platforms buzzed with accounts of the mild quake, with some individuals sharing their experiences of tremors, such as a resident in the Al Badia area who noted feeling the ground shift.
Experts have consistently reassured the public about the low seismic activity in the UAE, indicating that there is no cause for alarm.
Khalifa Al Ebri, the director of the Department of Seismology at NCM, previously emphasized the UAE’s low to moderate seismicity and its position outside the active seismic belt in an interview with local media.
Al Ebri stated, “We have frequent tremors ranging from two to three in a year. People do not feel most of these tremors, and they are just detected by the sensors. All these tremors do not affect the buildings or the infrastructure in the country.
In light of this, the occasional minor earthquake remains a rare and harmless occurrence in the region.
