Filipinos warned of scammers using names of politicians as election draws near

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has called on the public to remain wary about scammers who use names of politicians to rob them of money.

This followed as five persons from Camarin, Caloocan City were arrested on Friday for allegedly selling daily time records worth P30 each to residents on the promise of receiving cash from Sen. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao for doing community cleaning.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said the suspects claimed that personnel from Pacquiao’s office “ordered” them to recruit community cleaners who could have been given P7,500 as part of their earnings. Pacquiao however denied any involvement.

Eleazar said in a statement, “ I would like to remind the public to be discerning and do not easily trust anyone who will use the name of several personalities, including politicians, to ask for a favor or money.”

He added that he has ordered concerned police units to be on the watch to prevent unscrupulous individuals from cheating Filipinos of their money.

“There are plenty of scammers, especially in this season, who abuse the needs and desperation of other people so they can earn money from them,” Eleazar said. (AW)
