It has been a tradition for ninongs and ninangs to give aguinaldos to their godchildren during Christmas.
But this tradition has been commercialized as parents pick ninongs and ninangs through affinity, popularity and wealth.
However, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle reiterated the real essence of being a godparent.
In his homily, the Archbishop said godparents’ obligation is not just about giving gifts or money during their godchild’s birthday and on Christmas.
He noted that ninongs and ninangs should serve as second parents which provide guidance and serve as role model for their godchild.
“Kumustahin nyo inaanak nyo, bisitahin nyo, magbigay kayo ng mabuting halimbawa para masabi ng mga bata ‘ah yung ninong at ninang ko mabuting Pilipino, mabuting Kristyano,” Tagle said.
Tagle also reminded parents to teach their children to count their blessings this Christmas season instead of fostering them through materialistic things.
