South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters wins Miss Universe 2017

Ending the 39-year-long drought for her country in Miss Universe, South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters took home the Miss Universe crown on Sunday.

The 22-year-old business management graduate outscored 91 beautiful candidates during the finals.

Her country last won Miss Universe in 1978 and she is the second woman to bring home the crown for her country.

Colombia’s Laura Gonzalez placed first runner-up, Jamaica’s Davina Bennett was second runner-up.

The final three candidates were asked the question: “What quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that to your time as Miss Universe?”

Rachel Peters, the Philippines’ bet, failed to reach the top 5, ending her quest for the country’s fourth crown in one of the world’s most prestigious and awaited beauty pageants.
